In hour one of After Further Review, Matt begins by putting tonight in perspective for both teams. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney has a chance to join elite company with his 3rd National Championship tonight. Coach O and LSU have a chance to go down as the best team in school history, and arguably in college football history.
Steve Petrella of the Action Network joins Matt in segment two to talk the line movement around the Championship Game. How does the game being played in New Orleans affect the line in LSU’s favor?
“It really doesn’t, things are just so hard to quantify,” Petrella said. “You maybe get a tiny bump for LSU, but it’s hard to put a number on it.”
What has caused the line to drop down to LSU -5.5 as we near gametime?
“The day of the game you typically see some public money influence the market,” Petrella said. “You’re average bettor who maybe isn’t a big college football fan, grabs the underdog and the points.”
Former Ohio State player Jonathan Wells now covers the Buckeyes, and saw Clemson up close and personal two weeks ago joins the show. Wells offers his thoughts on Joe Burrow and Clemson. What has Wells made of Burrow’s career at LSU based off of what they saw in Columbus?
“I mean it’s light and day. We never got to see Joe Burrow play here,” Wells said. “To see what he’s been able to turn himself into is surprising to me.”
Wells talks what went wrong for Ohio State against Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl.
“We left too many points on the field. We didn’t close in the redzone,” Wells said. “When you leave points on the field against a championship team, it’s trouble.”
Matt talks the battle in the trenches to close out the hour.
