Locked On Lakers Podcast host, Anthony Irwin, joined the show.
“Holy cow, The Lakers got the next great Lakers center,” Irwin on Lakers fans reaction to getting AD.
Irwin didn’t think the trade would happen until Magic Johnson left the Lakers, David Griffin was hired and Boston wasn’t willing to trade Jayson Tatum. But which team won the trade?
“Can we say it was a tie?” Irwin giggled. Lakers are getting best player in the trade, but the Pelicans get three good players (Ingram, Ball and Hart) to help them next year and 4th pick with assets and a lot of options. Griffin is making a bet that Lakers long term, will not win after LeBron leaves. Irwin thinks it was tougher for the Lakers to give up the picks and not the players. “You’re talking about potential lottery picks,” said Irwin.
Irwin gave his scouting report on the three players:
Ingram: ‘Crazy’ long wing, who has the ability to play Point Guard. Very versatile defender. Became a better defender last year.Needs to improve on his shot.
Ball: When you have a Point Guard that is a giver and not a shooter, that’s important. Most great teams that have won a championship have had a great wing player that is the primary scorer.
Hart: He just a fine role player. Strong defender, can defend the 4 and 2. If he focuses on the right things, he can be a good fit on a great team.
“I think (Pelicans) will have one of the best defensive back courts in the NBA,” said Irwin.
He talked about the toxic situation the Lakers have been the last decade and why David Griffin’s bet will pay off.
