247sports’ national director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong joins Matt to look at LSU’s 2020 signing class now that the dust has settled after last Wednesday. What are Wiltfong’s overall impressions of the Tigers’ class?
“Well it was phenomenal class. It’s highlighted by possibly the best player in the entire country in tight end Arik Gilbert,” Wiltfong said. “You combine him with Kayshon Boutte and it’s maybe the best receiver-tight end duo signed in this class.”
How did LSU manage to land Gilbert? It was considered a surprise by many when he first announced.
“LSU brought him in on an official visit for the Florida game,”Wiltfong said. “I think he just saw a tremendous opportunity at LSU.”
Coach O and LSU missed out on 5-star defensive lineman Jordan Burch who stayed loyal to South Carolina. Burch’s committment was one of the stranger ordeals. Wiltfong explains what went down in the end between Burch, the Tigers and the Gamecocks.
“I think LSU made Jordan think a lot about his decision, but in the end he decided to stay and play close to home,” Wiltfong said. “He had a really good relationship with Will Mushchamp, and is playing with guys he knows very well.”
